OBSERVATIONS ON BEING
WORLD PREMIERE:
COVENTRY CITY OF CULTURE 2021
An immersive journey tracing the threads of our existence from plant to human, cell to planet, death into life.
We are all environments
Walking oceans
Teeming with life
United by an unending rhythm
That blurs the boundaries between all breathing bodies
And submerges us in torrents of being
Daisy Lafarge
Throughout time, some of the most profound and erudite thinkers from across cultures have described the ways in which humans are inseparable from the natural world — we are entangled, imbricated, and symbiotic.
Observations on Being draws audiences into a series of ecological meditations that illustrate our true intimacy with the natural world through a collection of artworks that explore music, multisensory experience and landscape. Each experience situates the audience in an encounter that traces the threads of our co-existence, expanding our sense of self beyond our bodies, reaching out into a sensuous and more-than-human experience of the world.
Through music, poetic narrative and visuals, each experience on the journey invites you to explore your participation in the natural environment, revealing previously invisible layers of one of Coventry’s most beautiful settings, London Road Cemetery: Paxton's Arboretum. Following the energy of the cosmos from photon to photosynthesis, from ancient bacteria to towering forests, the outbreath of a plant becomes the inbreath of an animal. Audiences step out of the everyday and into an expansion of the senses where they can discover the threads that link all living beings.
